Nigeria’s crude oil production has climbed to 1.71 million barrels per day between April 2025 and April 2026, marking its highest level in five years, according to the NNPC Limited. The milestone highlights a gradual recovery in the country’s oil sector after years of volatility, signaling renewed confidence in Nigeria’s upstream operations.

The figures were revealed in the company’s One Year Mandate Report Summary shared by Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari. The report also noted that NNPC Exploration and Production Limited achieved a record peak production of 565,000 barrels per day in December 2025, underscoring improved operational efficiency across its assets.

Beyond crude oil, the company reported significant progress in gas development and infrastructure. Key projects such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas Pipeline were completed, including the River Niger crossing, while facilities like the Assa North-Ohaji South gas processing plant and the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben pipeline connection were commissioned. Gas supply remained steady at 7.5 billion standard cubic feet per day, supported by new agreements with major industrial players, including Dangote Refinery.

In refining and partnerships, NNPC strengthened its position by consolidating a 7.25 percent equity stake in the Dangote refinery and introducing a new joint venture model aimed at improving efficiency and financial independence of its refineries. The company also advanced major projects, including securing approvals for the Bonga South-West Aparo development and resolving the long-standing OPL 245 dispute, paving the way for new production-sharing agreements.

Internally, the company pointed to reforms designed to improve transparency and performance. Monthly reporting has been reinstated, earnings calls resumed, and remittances to the federation account have been consistent since mid-2025. With the onboarding of 1,000 new staff and initiatives like its women-focused inclusion programme, NNPC says it is positioning itself as a more modern and accountable energy company driving Nigeria’s economic growth.
