UK Cyberwar Warning Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Cybersecurity Preparedness

The United Kingdom has issued a strong warning about the rising threat of cyberwarfare, a development that is drawing attention to the state of Nigeria’s own cybersecurity preparedness. The alert comes as global cyber threats become more sophisticated and increasingly driven by state-backed actors rather than ordinary criminal groups.

Richard Horne, head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), warned that countries should prepare for a surge in cyberattacks linked to geopolitical tensions. Speaking at the CyberUK conference, he noted that nations such as Russia, Iran, and China are among those most active in carrying out advanced cyber operations.

Horne also highlighted that future cyberattacks may go beyond traditional ransomware, with “hacktivist-style” disruptions capable of shutting down critical systems without financial motives. He cautioned that such attacks could be more damaging because they are designed to destabilise rather than profit.

The warning has raised concerns in Nigeria, where recent cyber incidents have already exposed weaknesses in key sectors, including financial systems, government databases, and digital infrastructure. Experts say these breaches reflect gaps in regulation, enforcement, and overall cyber resilience.

Cybersecurity analysts in Nigeria argue that the global shift toward state-sponsored cyberattacks mirrors local risks, where attackers are becoming more organised and strategic. They are calling for stronger cyber defence systems, better-trained professionals, improved compliance with data protection laws, and closer collaboration with global tech partners.

Meanwhile, experts warn that artificial intelligence is accelerating the cyber threat landscape by making it easier for attackers to identify vulnerabilities. In Nigeria, where cyber awareness and institutional safeguards are still developing, stakeholders say AI-driven threats could significantly worsen existing security challenges if urgent action is not taken.
