The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has been urged to embrace technology and strengthen institutional efficiency to sustain its recent revenue growth and improve service delivery across the country. This call was made during the commissioning of the agency’s new 16-floor headquarters in Abuja, a development seen as a major step toward modernizing Nigeria’s revenue system.

Speaking at the event, Taiwo Oyedele, Minister of State for Finance, described the new facility as a symbol of a modern, integrated, and technology-driven tax administration. He emphasized that beyond infrastructure, the real expectation is for the NRS to leverage digital tools, deepen operational efficiency, and build public trust through transparency and compliance.

Oyedele explained that the transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service to the Nigeria Revenue Service represents more than a rebranding. According to him, it reflects a broader mandate anchored on stronger governance, accountability, and improved performance. He noted that recent reforms have already delivered historic revenue gains, proving that well-structured institutions can significantly boost national income.

Highlighting the importance of systemic reform, Oyedele pointed out that Nigeria has moved from a fragmented tax system to a more coherent revenue framework. He stressed that such changes are critical for attracting investors, providing clarity for businesses, and ensuring efficiency in governance. He also linked the progress to the broader economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, noting that the administration has shifted the country toward a more sustainable fiscal path.

In his remarks, Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the NRS, said the reforms were necessary to address Nigeria’s previous fiscal challenges, including weak investor confidence and structural inefficiencies. He explained that over 60 fragmented tax laws have now been streamlined into a unified framework, improving compliance and predictability without increasing tax burdens. Adedeji added that enhanced transparency, better remittance systems, and initiatives like the National Single Window have strengthened fiscal governance, positioning the NRS as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic transformation.
