Nigeria’s digital infrastructure received a major boost as Digital Realty has activated a new Internet Exchange Point (IXPN) presence at its newly commissioned data centre in Lekki, Lagos. The development strengthens local internet connectivity and marks another step in positioning Lagos as a leading digital hub in West Africa.
The expansion builds on IXPN’s existing presence at Digital Realty’s Victoria Island campus and now extends across 12 data centres nationwide. With this growth, IXPN is now accessible from all major data centre locations in Lagos, improving interconnection between service providers, cloud platforms, and network operators across the country.
Strategically, the Lekki facility plays a critical role as the landing point for the 2Africa subsea cable system—one of the world’s largest submarine cable projects connecting over 46 locations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. This positioning significantly enhances Nigeria’s capacity to handle global data traffic with improved speed and reliability.
Industry experts say the development will reduce internet latency, improve data exchange efficiency, and strengthen resilience for businesses relying on cloud and digital services. Digital Realty also becomes the first carrier-neutral data centre operator in Lagos to run two separate campuses, a move that enhances redundancy and disaster recovery options for customers.
Speaking on the development, Digital Realty Nigeria Managing Director Ike Nnamani described the expansion as a step toward deeper integration with global networks. IXPN CEO Muhammed Rudman also noted that the expansion will improve access for over 130 peering members, including ISPs and global content providers, ultimately supporting faster connections and broader digital inclusion across Nigeria.
