Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon founded by Jeff Bezos, experienced a significant service disruption following a fire at one of its United Arab Emirates data centers. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Dubai time on Sunday, after reports indicated an unidentified object struck the facility, igniting a blaze. AWS confirmed the disruption via its Health Dashboard, noting that firefighters had to shut down both utility power and backup generators to control the fire.
The outage affected the ME-CENTRAL-1 Region, causing widespread issues for users attempting to launch EC2 instances, access networking APIs, and utilize core services like DynamoDB and S3. AWS stated that while existing instances in some zones remained operational, new instances could not be launched, and many services faced high latency and error rates. The company advised customers to failover to other regions where possible while it worked to restore power and connectivity, warning that full recovery would take several hours.
The incident coincided with ongoing regional tensions, as Iranian projectiles struck parts of the UAE on the same day. While it is not confirmed whether the fire was linked to these attacks, the geopolitical context has raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the Middle East. Iran’s recent missile and drone strikes targeted US bases and allied sites across the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, amplifying fears over regional security.
AWS clarified that only one of its Availability Zones in the UAE was impacted and that the rest of its global infrastructure remained operational. With 123 Availability Zones across 39 regions worldwide, the company has been rerouting traffic to unaffected data centers to maintain service continuity. Mitigation measures, such as restoring some EC2 networking functions and enabling Elastic IP reassignments, have been rolled out, though complete recovery is still pending.
The UAE outage underscores the growing challenges tech giants face in safeguarding cloud infrastructure amid geopolitical instability.
