Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed reports suggesting tension between his company and OpenAI, calling them “nonsense.” The comments follow a Wall Street Journal article claiming Nvidia might scale back its $100 billion investment in OpenAI, initially announced in September. The plan also included building 10 gigawatts of computing infrastructure to support OpenAI’s AI projects.
According to the WSJ, Huang has privately expressed concerns about OpenAI’s business strategy and competition from other AI firms like Anthropic and Google. The report also suggested that Nvidia and OpenAI are rethinking their partnership, potentially scaling the investment down to a “mere tens of billions of dollars,” though no formal changes have been made.
OpenAI, however, emphasized its ongoing collaboration with Nvidia. A spokesperson told the WSJ that Nvidia “has underpinned our breakthroughs from the start, powers our systems today, and will remain central as we scale what comes next.” The statement highlights the continued importance of Nvidia’s technology in OpenAI’s growth.
During a visit to Taipei, Huang reaffirmed Nvidia’s commitment, telling Bloomberg reporters that the company would “definitely participate” in OpenAI’s upcoming funding round. “We will invest a great deal of money,” Huang said, praising OpenAI as “one of the most consequential companies of our time.” He refrained from specifying exact amounts, leaving that announcement to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
OpenAI is reportedly aiming to raise a $100 billion funding round, with Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft, and SoftBank all in discussions for potential investment. Huang’s remarks aim to clarify Nvidia’s ongoing support, reassuring investors and the tech industry that the AI giant remains a core partner in OpenAI’s ambitious expansion plans.
