OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.2, its latest AI model, in a strategic move to counter mounting competition from Google’s Gemini 3. Unveiled on Thursday, GPT-5.2 is positioned as OpenAI’s most advanced model yet, designed to serve both developers and professional users with applications ranging from coding and document analysis to complex multi-step reasoning. The release comes shortly after an internal “code red” memo highlighted CEO Sam Altman’s concern over ChatGPT’s slowing traffic and growing market share losses to Google.
The new GPT-5.2 comes in three tiers: Instant for fast routine tasks like writing, translation, and information queries; Thinking for complex structured work such as coding, mathematical problem-solving, and planning; and Pro, which emphasizes maximum accuracy and reliability for high-stakes applications. OpenAI executives say the model is capable of generating spreadsheets, presentations, and production-grade code, understanding long contexts, and integrating tools across multi-step projects—features aimed at expanding enterprise adoption.
GPT-5.2 directly competes with Google’s Gemini 3, particularly in reasoning and multi-step problem-solving. Benchmark tests suggest GPT-5.2 outperforms Gemini 3 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus-4.5 in coding, math, science, long-context reasoning, and tool integration. OpenAI research lead Aidan Clark notes that improvements in math and logical reasoning are critical, as they allow the AI to maintain accuracy across multi-step workflows, including financial modeling, forecasting, and data analysis.
The launch also reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy to strengthen its enterprise presence. While earlier models focused more on consumer-facing features, GPT-5.2 is optimized for developers building AI-powered applications. Early adopters report measurable gains in coding performance and reduced errors, with the Thinking model producing 38% fewer mistakes than its predecessor. OpenAI executives emphasize that GPT-5.2 consolidates the company’s previous upgrades, offering a more reliable foundation for professional and production-grade AI applications.
However, OpenAI’s push comes with risks. Running high-performance reasoning models is computationally expensive, raising costs as the company scales.
