ChatGPT Turns Three: How the AI Revolution is Reshaping Business, Tech, and Our Future

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI quietly introduced ChatGPT, describing it simply as “a model that interacts in a conversational way.” In just three years, this unassuming chatbot has become a cultural and technological phenomenon, topping Apple’s free app charts and inspiring a surge of generative AI products across industries. What began as an experiment in conversational AI has grown into a tool that impacts millions of users worldwide every day.

Experts argue that ChatGPT’s influence extends far beyond convenience. Karen Hao, author of Empire of AI, recently told TechCrunch that OpenAI has “already grown more powerful than pretty much any nation-state,” fundamentally reshaping geopolitics and daily life. Similarly, Charlie Warzel of The Atlantic described today’s world as “the world ChatGPT built,” highlighting the uncertainty and instability young and older generations feel as AI continues to redefine career paths and market expectations.

Despite some anxieties, the AI revolution has generated massive economic opportunities. Nvidia, for example, has seen its stock soar nearly 1,000% since ChatGPT’s launch, while other tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Broadcom have also ridden the AI wave. These companies now dominate the S&P 500, collectively contributing almost half of its growth over the past three years, signaling a more top-heavy market shaped by AI-driven innovation.

Yet, the rapid growth comes with caution. AI leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, acknowledge the potential for a market “bubble,” echoing comparisons to the dot-com boom of the late 1990s. While some individual companies may falter, industry insiders like Bret Taylor, Sierra CEO and OpenAI board chair, maintain that AI’s long-term economic impact will be transformative, promising enormous value akin to the rise of the internet.

As ChatGPT celebrates its third birthday, its story reflects both excitement and uncertainty. Generative AI continues to evolve, shaping how we work, invest, and live. Whether the next three years will validate the optimism of AI believers or reveal the risks of an overheated market remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: ChatGPT has already changed the trajectory of technology and society in ways few could have imagined.
