President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, to the State House in Abuja, using the occasion to highlight Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms aimed at empowering the nation’s youth. Tinubu emphasized that these initiatives are designed to strengthen institutions, create opportunities, and equip young Nigerians with skills to compete globally. The meeting underscored the central role of youths in driving the country’s economic growth and future prosperity.

Prince Edward, in his role as Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, briefed President Tinubu on the upcoming award events in Lagos. The ceremony will recognize 320 Nigerian youths for their talents, achievements, and contributions to national development. The event, supported by the Lagos State Government, aims to inspire young people to pursue their passions and enhance their skills, reflecting a shared commitment to youth empowerment.

During the visit, President Tinubu reiterated that the economic reforms span multiple sectors and are crafted to ensure inclusivity, innovation, and long-term growth. He highlighted initiatives such as the special education loan fund, which guarantees that students admitted into universities receive the necessary support to complete their studies. Tinubu stressed that education is a critical tool in reducing poverty and preparing Nigeria’s young population—whose median age is 17—for global competitiveness.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, reinforced the president’s message, noting that reforms were deliberately structured to increase youth participation in the economy, promote skills development, and facilitate access to opportunities. Tinubu also highlighted infrastructural projects, including fibre optic expansion, as mechanisms to boost youth engagement and foster national development, alongside efforts to address security challenges.

Prince Edward commended the Nigerian government for the positive impact of its reforms on youths, praising both President Tinubu and Minister Edun for their leadership. The Duke emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent and applauded the ongoing initiatives that are enabling Nigerian youths to thrive, learn, and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s socio-economic growth.
