Governor Seyi Makinde Unveils Oyo’s AfCFTA Strategy to Boost Trade, Create Jobs, and Drive Economic Growth
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unlocking economic prosperity and sustainable development through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The governor launched the Oyo State AfCFTA sub-national implementation strategy, describing it as a key driver for job creation, business expansion, and trade growth across the state.
Speaking during a post-engagement meeting on the AfCFTA strategy at the Local Government Service Commission Training School in Ibadan, Makinde said the initiative aligns with his government’s long-term vision to build strong institutions and position Oyo as a trade hub in Nigeria and Africa. He emphasized that the state’s growing infrastructure network, strategic population size, and business-friendly policies make it well-prepared to take advantage of AfCFTA opportunities.
Governor Makinde highlighted his administration’s achievements, including infrastructure renewal projects, the upgrading of Ibadan Airport to international standards, and the creation of a $6 million Sovereign Wealth Fund to secure the state’s economic future. He noted that Oyo’s investment in road construction, education, and healthcare has already improved living standards while stimulating commerce and attracting new investors.
The governor also commended the AfCFTA technical working group, led by his Special Adviser on AfCFTA and International Trade, Ms. Neo Theodore Tlhaselo, for their dedication in positioning Oyo as the first sub-national in Africa to adopt the AfCFTA implementation strategy. He stated that the policy will open access to bilateral partnerships, expand market reach for local entrepreneurs, and integrate Oyo more deeply into Africa’s $3.4 trillion trade bloc.
In her remarks, Tlhaselo praised Governor Makinde’s visionary leadership, describing the strategy as a “gateway for Oyo State to participate in global trade with legal and structural backing.” She added that the AfCFTA framework will not only strengthen trade relations across Africa but also enhance productivity and industrial competitiveness within the state, ultimately creating new employment and investment opportunities for its residents.
