OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has unveiled its most affordable subscription plan in India, introducing ChatGPT Go at just ₹399 ($4.57) per month. The India-exclusive plan, announced on Tuesday, aims to strengthen the company’s footprint in its second-largest market while making AI tools more accessible to the country’s vast user base.
India, home to nearly one billion internet users, has long been seen as a price-sensitive market where global tech companies often roll out localized, lower-cost offerings. By launching ChatGPT Go, OpenAI is seeking to tap into this growing audience, especially among students, professionals, and creators who want advanced AI access at a fraction of global prices.
The new plan provides subscribers with ten times more messages and image generations compared to the free version, alongside faster response times. OpenAI also noted that higher-tier plans come with even greater usage limits, allowing power users and enterprises to scale their AI interactions.
Currently, OpenAI offers three subscription tiers in India: ChatGPT Go at ₹399, ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999, and the premium ChatGPT Pro at ₹19,900 per month. The tiered pricing strategy reflects the company’s effort to serve a wide range of users, from casual learners to businesses requiring high-volume AI output.
Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with India’s IT minister to discuss developing a low-cost AI ecosystem. Altman has described India as a critical growth market, highlighting that the country is already the company’s second-largest user base after the United States — and could soon become the largest.
