Apple Explores Generative AI to Accelerate Custom Chip Design, Says Tech Chief

Apple is exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence to enhance the design process of its custom chips, according to Johny Srouji, the company’s senior vice president of hardware technologies. In a recent speech delivered in Belgium while receiving an award from semiconductor R&D firm Imec, Srouji emphasized that AI could significantly speed up chip development and improve productivity. This marks another step in Apple’s broader strategy of deepening its in-house chip capabilities, which have become central to its product innovation.

Srouji traced Apple’s journey from the launch of its first custom chip, the A4, in 2010 to the present-day processors that power devices like the Mac and Vision Pro headset. He noted that Apple’s ability to stay ahead in chip performance is tied to using cutting-edge tools, particularly the latest electronic design automation (EDA) software. Companies like Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, which dominate the EDA market, are already integrating AI into their platforms, aligning with Apple’s ambitions.

Apple sees significant potential in generative AI tools to streamline the chip design process, Srouji said. He highlighted the increasing complexity of modern chip architecture and how AI can address these challenges by enabling faster and more efficient design iterations. “EDA companies are super critical in supporting our chip design complexities,” he remarked, suggesting a growing reliance on AI-enhanced design workflows in future Apple projects.

Reflecting on Apple’s strategy, Srouji also pointed out that a major lesson in chip design has been the importance of making bold, decisive moves. He cited the company’s 2020 transition from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon for Macs as a key example. Apple did not create a fallback plan for that shift, opting instead to go all in, which included a massive effort to re-engineer macOS for the new architecture.

This candid insight into Apple’s internal chip strategy underscores the company’s long-term commitment to vertical integration and technological leadership. With generative AI poised to become a vital tool in semiconductor innovation, Apple’s investment in AI-driven design reflects both its ambition and its intent to remain ahead in an increasingly competitive global chip market.
