In the wake of a horrific massacre that claimed the lives of over 200 Christians in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, the Mexican Episcopal Conference has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity. The tragic event occurred on June 13, when attackers stormed the community at night, unleashing violence with weapons, fire, and summary executions while residents slept.
The bishops, through a statement signed by Bishop Ramón Castro Castro and Bishop Héctor M. Pérez Villarreal, described the massacre as “inhuman violence” that cries out to heaven. They condemned the brutality of the attack and offered prayers for the victims, survivors, and grieving families, acknowledging the deep pain and devastation left in its wake.
Calling for global awareness and spiritual unity, the Mexican Church leaders urged the faithful to raise prayers for peace and healing in Nigeria. They particularly emphasized the importance of supporting the Nigerian Church and people during this challenging time, especially in the ongoing “jubilee year of hope.”
In their statement, they also encouraged all Mexican ecclesial communities to honor the memory of those killed by offering Masses and prayer vigils. They framed the victims as martyrs and expressed a desire that such collective prayer would inspire a change of heart among those driven by hatred.
Concluding their message, the bishops invoked the image of Christ, the Prince of Peace, urging global Christians to work for reconciliation, forgiveness, and justice. They expressed hope that faith and compassion would ultimately overcome violence and restore dignity and peace to affected communities.
