Meta Platforms has named Arun Srinivas as its new Managing Director and Head for India, with the appointment taking effect from July 1. Srinivas, who currently leads Meta’s advertising business in India, will take over the company’s operations in one of its most significant global markets. His promotion underscores Meta’s intent to strengthen its leadership and navigate the growing complexity of the Indian digital ecosystem.

The leadership change comes at a time when Meta faces heightened regulatory pressure in India. The company has been under the scanner for alleged anti-competitive behavior, especially surrounding data privacy and its control over the digital communication market. Meta’s platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, dominate the Indian social media and messaging space.

Last November, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Meta for antitrust violations and imposed a five-year restriction on WhatsApp from sharing user data with other Meta-owned apps for advertising purposes. The CCI’s decision was seen as a significant regulatory pushback against Big Tech’s data practices in India.

In response, Meta challenged the ruling and expressed concerns about the potential impact on its business model. Earlier this year, the company received temporary relief when an Indian tribunal paused the enforcement of the data-sharing ban, giving Meta breathing room as legal proceedings continue.

With Arun Srinivas now at the helm, Meta is expected to adopt a more localized and strategic approach to policy, partnerships, and growth. His familiarity with the company’s ad ecosystem and regulatory challenges positions him to lead Meta’s efforts in maintaining market leadership while navigating India’s evolving digital regulatory environment.
