Meta, in collaboration with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), has launched the Llama Impact Accelerator program to develop impactful AI solutions. The initiative also involves key partners such as the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The program is designed to support the creation of AI-driven innovations tailored to Nigeria’s unique development needs.

This accelerator program is part of Meta’s larger mission to democratize access to responsible artificial intelligence and encourage grassroots innovation. It emphasizes collaboration between government bodies, academia, and civil society, aiming to build an inclusive AI ecosystem that reflects local priorities and realities. Meta believes that accessible, open-source AI can empower communities to address national development challenges effectively.

The program includes a six-week incubation phase featuring technical training and expert mentorship, followed by six months of additional support. Participants will receive extended resources and opportunities to refine and scale their AI solutions. The initiative is particularly focused on open innovation, encouraging the use of Meta’s Llama models in creative and locally relevant ways.

Minister of Communications, Bosun Tijani, highlighted the strategic importance of AI for Nigeria’s future, calling the partnership a major step toward building a sustainable tech ecosystem. He emphasized that the program will provide Nigerian innovators with critical tools and guidance to address challenges in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and public safety.

Targeting early-stage startups, the eight-month accelerator will prioritize four key sectors: agriculture, security and safety, healthcare, and a wildcard category for bold, high-impact applications of AI. Through this effort, Meta and its partners aim to spark transformative technological solutions that can fuel national growth and position Nigeria as a regional AI innovation leader.
