Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu, commending his efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s struggling economy. Speaking to journalists in Lagos following a private visit to the president, Fayose explained that his meeting with Tinubu was purely personal and aimed at encouraging him. Acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, he noted that there is no miraculous fix but praised the president for taking “courageous steps” that give hope to Nigerians.

Fayose emphasized that his previous criticisms of past administrations do not blind him to current progress. Drawing comparisons, he argued that the situation under Tinubu is improving, particularly in areas like currency stability and economic management. “For the little the president has done, we must commend him,” he said, asserting that recognition should be based on merit, not political loyalty.

Despite being a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose reiterated his long-standing admiration for Tinubu’s leadership. He recalled that even during his tenure as a PDP governor, he respected Tinubu’s political acumen and did not hide his support. He urged other leaders to adopt a similar mindset, emphasizing the importance of national interest over party politics.

On the topic of recent defections from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fayose firmly rejected any suggestion that he might follow suit. He clarified that, at 65, he had no intention of switching parties, stating that others who left did so of their own accord, possibly due to internal party struggles or faith in Tinubu’s leadership. “Ayo Fayose will not move from PDP to any political party,” he affirmed.

Fayose also candidly admitted that the PDP is in crisis and warned that the party risks becoming “a carcass” if urgent reforms are not undertaken. However, he distanced himself from any active rescue mission for the party, noting that his time in frontline politics is over. He concluded by expressing willingness to contribute in smaller ways, but reiterated that the burden of saving the PDP now lies with those in current leadership positions.
