The Government of Ghana has entered into advanced discussions with a strategic investor for the revamp and potential takeover of AirtelTigo, now operating under the brand name AT. The initiative is aimed at repositioning the struggling state-owned telecom operator and boosting its competitiveness in the telecommunications sector.
Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, made the disclosure during a stakeholder meeting with telecom industry leaders on May 30, 2025. He indicated that the government has set a 60-day timeline for concluding the negotiations, with the objective of delivering improved services by the end of the third quarter.
The partnership is expected to bring in much-needed capital and technical know-how, which will enable AT to overcome the market challenges it has faced since the government assumed control in 2021. The Minister emphasized that the goal is to ensure AT becomes a viable and competitive player in the market once more.
In addition to the AT revamp, Cabinet has approved the allocation of new spectrum resources to other major telecom players such as MTN and Telecel. These allocations are designed to enhance infrastructure development and improve service delivery across the industry.
Overall, these developments reflect a broader government strategy to foster innovation, expand telecom networks, and ensure higher-quality services for consumers. The involvement of private investors is seen as a critical step toward revitalizing Ghana’s telecommunications landscape.
