Vice President Kashim Shettima praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making courageous and transformative decisions aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s economy. Speaking at the 15th Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Lecture (MEDL) in Abuja, Shettima highlighted the government’s focus on addressing key economic challenges. He emphasized that Tinubu’s approach is rooted in precision, likening it to the exacting standards of engineering, with a focus on accurate measurement of national revenues, deficits, and economic prospects.

Shettima further noted that the Tinubu administration is focused not just on survival but on long-term transformation. He pointed out that the administration’s policies are designed to create a shift towards productivity, sustainability, and prosperity, setting the stage for a stronger and more resilient economy. He emphasized the boldness of the decisions, particularly the controversial removal of fuel subsidies and efforts to tackle Nigeria’s high debt-to-revenue ratio.

The Vice President’s remarks underscored the administration’s commitment to taking difficult but necessary actions to address the nation’s economic problems. Shettima framed these moves as crucial steps toward ending reliance on unsustainable practices and building a future where the country’s economic foundation is grounded in real productivity and growth, rather than short-term fixes.

In a related address, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who delivered the keynote lecture, explored Nigeria’s potential in sectors such as energy, oil and gas, healthcare, and infrastructure. Omisore urged the government and other stakeholders to leverage these opportunities to drive sustainable development. This call was in line with the event’s theme of promoting engineering as a critical tool for national advancement.

The event saw participation from notable figures including Chief Bisi Akande, who stressed the importance of engineering in national development, and various key ministers who reinforced the need for strategic use of resources and innovation. Engr. Alhassan Mohammed, National Chairman of NIMechE, also called for a greater integration of engineering solutions into Nigeria’s broader development framework.
