The Abia State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN Nigeria to advance its digital transformation strategy. The agreement, revealed by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, is the result of months of discussions aimed at boosting broadband access, modernizing government operations, and promoting economic development across the state. According to Kanu, the deal is expected to reshape Abia’s digital landscape and ensure inclusivity, especially for rural communities.
The MoU outlines six major focus areas. First, it targets full broadband coverage across Abia State by the end of 2025, ensuring high-speed internet access even in the most remote regions. This foundational infrastructure will support various digital services and stimulate productivity statewide. Secondly, a device ownership scheme will be introduced to provide civil servants with essential digital tools such as laptops and Wi-Fi devices, funded through MTN’s support.
A significant component of the partnership is the enhancement of digital governance through cloud services and improved computing infrastructure. These upgrades are expected to streamline government operations, improve transparency, and raise public service efficiency. Additionally, the agreement includes the development of the Abia Digital Mall to empower SMEs and informal sector players with digital platforms that expand their market reach and capabilities.
To further modernize communication and business environments, MTN will roll out 4G and 5G services in key cities—Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia—by year-end. This will enable faster internet speeds and better connectivity for businesses and residents alike. Complementing this is the planned creation of a digital marketplace to support e-governance and online commerce, aligning with the governor’s broader digital vision for the state.
Mr. Kanu emphasized the potential of the MoU to bridge the digital divide and spur socioeconomic growth. He noted that the transformation will empower rural communities to participate in digital commerce and enhance their productivity. He also highlighted the recent success of Abia Warriors Football Club in the Nigerian Professional Football League as symbolic of the state’s ongoing progress across sectors.
