To fully harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Nigeria needs to establish a robust regulatory framework, according to Ola Williams, Managing Director of Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana. Williams emphasized that effective AI regulations should address two crucial factors: the usefulness of the technology and the trust it inspires. She made these remarks while speaking to journalists in Lagos, highlighting the importance of technology not only solving real-world problems but also ensuring public confidence in its safety and ethical application.
Williams stressed that AI must be trustworthy and come with built-in safeguards to protect societal and ethical values. She added that the responsibility of building and maintaining trust in AI falls not only on governments but also on companies like Microsoft that are directly involved in AI development and deployment. Organizations must invest in robust AI governance practices to ensure that the technology is used safely and securely, in a way that meets public expectations.
She also highlighted the need for significant infrastructure development to support AI innovation. With AI capabilities evolving rapidly—doubling every six months—Williams argued that both public and private sectors must continually invest in cutting-edge infrastructure to keep pace with technological advancements. This ongoing investment is essential to ensure that AI’s potential is fully realized in Nigeria and across Africa.
Finally, Williams pointed out that collaboration among industry leaders is key to scaling AI’s impact. As AI continues to evolve, it will require a concerted effort from both private companies and government entities to develop comprehensive digital ecosystems. This collective approach will be crucial to fostering an environment where AI can thrive and bring lasting benefits to society
