MTN Ghana has officially confirmed that approximately 5,700 of its customers may have been affected by a recent data breach involving unauthorized access to personal information. The breach prompted an immediate response from the company and triggered an investigation by Ghana’s Data Protection Commission (DPC). While the full scope of the incident is still being determined, the telecom giant is treating the matter with urgency and transparency.
According to a statement issued on April 28, MTN Group is collaborating with top cybersecurity experts and has initiated a forensic investigation in line with industry protocols. The company stated that all potentially affected customers will be contacted directly, and they are prioritizing efforts to identify the source and impact of the breach. CEO Stephen Blewett emphasized that protecting customer privacy remains central to MTN’s operations.
MTN reassured the public that the situation is being handled with seriousness, committing resources to contain and manage the breach. The company reiterated its pledge to uphold data integrity and maintain the trust of customers and stakeholders. Although the investigation is ongoing, MTN stated that it would continue to communicate transparently as more details emerge.
In the meantime, MTN is urging customers to remain cautious and follow best practices in digital security. This includes updating apps regularly, using strong and unique passwords, avoiding suspicious links, and never sharing sensitive information like OTPs or PINs through calls or messages. The company also advised placing fraud alerts with credit bureaus to prevent potential identity theft or financial fraud.
