President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing its mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of independence from political influence. He also signed an executive order suspending foreign development assistance for 90 days, pending a review. Trump criticized WHO for failing to implement necessary reforms and for placing an unfair financial burden on the U.S. compared to other nations, particularly China.
At the signing ceremony, Trump reiterated his long-standing criticism of the UN health agency, accusing it of exploiting U.S. contributions. His decision marks a continuation of his previous attempt to withdraw from WHO during his first term, which was reversed by President Joe Biden in 2021. Trump emphasized that the U.S. would no longer tolerate being “ripped off” by international organizations.
The United States is WHO’s largest donor, contributing nearly 18% of its total budget, and its withdrawal will take full effect in 12 months. The decision is expected to significantly impact global health initiatives, as WHO’s latest two-year budget stands at $6.8 billion. Experts warn that the U.S. exit could weaken international efforts to combat health crises and disrupt funding for critical medical programs worldwide.
