The Lagos State Government has announced its plans to integrate Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) infrastructure into its road planning and design as part of its commitment to promoting sustainable mobility.

This was disclosed by Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, during the 2024 World Car-Free Day event held in Lagos.

World Car-Free Day, observed annually on September 23, emphasizes the importance of reducing carbon emissions and promoting healthier living through alternative transport modes like walking and cycling.

Osiyemi urged Lagos residents to adopt active mobility such as brisk walking or cycling, emphasizing the positive impact on health and well-being.

He highlighted that activities like walking and cycling, even for just 11 minutes, can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and early death.

The commissioner underscored the collaboration between the state government and the Lagos Urban Development Initiatives (LUDI), emphasizing how leaving cars at home contributes to better air quality, safer streets, and more livable spaces.

He also encouraged residents to incorporate sustainable transportation practices into their daily routines beyond just the event, aiming for a greener, healthier future.

Osiyemi stressed that the shift toward sustainable mobility aligns with the state’s broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and fostering a more connected, environmentally conscious community.
