The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called on the Federal Government to urgently renew the port concession licenses of terminal operators, which have been delayed, creating uncertainty for maritime workers.

MWUN President, Adewale Adeyanju, highlighted concerns during the 2024 Dockworkers Day celebration, noting that the delay in signing the agreements is impacting port operations and creating job insecurity for workers.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, reiterated the government’s commitment to unlocking the potential of the marine and blue economy sectors, which are crucial for job creation and economic development. The maritime sector remains a key player in Nigeria’s GDP growth, and the government aims to enhance productivity and create an enabling environment for private sector investment.

Industry leaders, including the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN), stressed the importance of dockworkers in ensuring seamless operations at Nigeria’s seaports. They called on terminal operators to invest in workers’ welfare, training, and safety, ensuring that the maritime industry continues to thrive.
