The Federal Government has launched the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of subsidised milled rice, requiring buyers to present a registered National Identification Number (NIN) to prevent racketeering and ensure fair distribution.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, stated that the rice will be sold at ₦40,000 per 50kg bag, limited to “one bag per person” as part of efforts to curb high food prices and alleviate the impact of the current food crisis in Nigeria.
Kyari explained that the global rise in food prices, attributed to factors such as COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, and climate change, has contributed to food insecurity.
The government aims to reduce these pressures through the rice distribution initiative and other measures, including the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to vulnerable groups. The initiative seeks to support Nigerian households and reduce the cost of essential food items.
To ensure transparency, the government has introduced a system where beneficiaries must verify their identities through their NIN, phone numbers, or public service registration on the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS).
Once verified, buyers will receive a treasury receipt and code for rice collection at designated centres. Kyari urged citizens to remain patient as the government works to enhance food security across the country.
