Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that senior officials from the Biden administration pressured his company to censor certain COVID-19 content during the pandemic.
In a letter dated August 26 to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, he mentioned that the pressure included requests to remove humor and satire related to COVID-19 and expressed frustration when Meta did not comply fully.
Zuckerberg expressed regret for not speaking out against this government pressure sooner and acknowledged that some content removal decisions made by Meta were mistakes in hindsight.
He also informed the committee that he would not be making any contributions to support electoral infrastructure in the upcoming presidential election to avoid influencing the process.
The letter was addressed to Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and was posted on the committee’s Facebook page, where it was hailed as a victory for free speech. Meta and the White House have not commented on the letter as of now.
