The Nigerian Senate has raised concerns about the $1.5 billion allocated in 2021 for the maintenance of the Port Harcourt Refinery.
Opeyemi Bamidele, Chairman of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee, criticized the lack of progress despite the significant investment.
He highlighted that while billions have been spent on state-owned refineries, they remain non-operational.
Bamidele argued that it is unjust to neglect public companies while private businesses succeed.
He called for an investigation into the ineffective use of funds for refinery maintenance and emphasized that government-owned refineries should be treated with more seriousness.
In response, Mele Kyari, CEO of NNPCL, denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the company has significantly improved its performance.
He accused the media of targeting him and the company with deliberate attacks, asserting that NNPCL has transitioned from years of losses to profitability.
