The Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC) has proposed a business model to leverage a $500 million grant from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to empower Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees in Benue State. The model aims to provide entrepreneurship skills and business grants to these individuals, integrating them into society and ensuring their self-reliance. BIPC’s Managing Director/CEO Dr. Raymond Asemakaha highlighted that the model includes various empowerment schemes for refugees, returnees, and IDPs, allocating at least 15% of micro-employment opportunities to them. This initiative seeks to transform displaced persons into economic catalysts rather than burdens on society. The grant will also enable BIPC to expand its Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises portfolios, creating new jobs and wealth in the region. Asemakaha expressed confidence that the partnership with UNHCR would provide sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by refugees and IDPs in Benue State.
