The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticized the recent increase in electricity tariffs for Band A customers from N206.80 to N209.5 per kilowatt-hour.

In a statement on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the hike, describing it as impunity and arrogance. He expressed concerns that this increase would lead to more business closures and hardships for consumers.

The DisCos announced the tariff hike on Wednesday, citing high operational costs due to rising inflation and exchange rate fluctuations as reasons.

Ajaero noted that the Federal Government had previously promised to address the tariff issues during a recent national strike, but instead, another increase was implemented.

Ajaero emphasized that the frequent increases in tariffs are unreasonable and detrimental to the economy. He argued that the government’s and DisCos’ excuses for the hike reflect a lack of seriousness in resolving the energy crisis.

The NLC demanded an immediate reversal of the tariff hike, deeming it unjustifiable and harmful to both the people and the economy.
