Taxi drivers in Nigeria are unhappy about a new government plan to punish reckless drivers with jail time. They worry the rules are unclear and too harsh.

The plan, from the Federal Road Safety Corps, would give states more power to fine and even jail drivers who break the rules.

Taxi driver union spokesman Segun Falade says the new rules don’t make sense. He wants the government to focus on educating drivers and making sure they’re properly trained, instead of just throwing them in jail.

Other drivers worry about accidents caused by car problems, not bad driving. Driver Innocent Dashe says what if a tire blows out and you accidentally hit someone? Should you go to jail for that?Dashe says the government should focus on making sure car parts are safe instead of putting drivers behind bars.
