The House of Representatives has called on Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chairs the Board of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), to convene an emergency meeting aimed at reviving the inactive 252MW Gbarain Power Plant in Bayelsa State. This decision followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance presented by Rep Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji (Bayelsa, PDP).

Rep Oforji highlighted the plant’s dormancy for the past three years after a fire incident, urging the NDPHC to address the situation promptly. He noted the Bayelsa State Government’s efforts to rehabilitate the plant’s infrastructure and expressed concern over the NDPHC’s alleged failure to replace the damaged Power Control Module, despite the state’s intervention.

Furthermore, Rep Oforji raised concerns about the NDPHC’s proposal to designate the plant as a construction site instead of restoring its functionality, despite having significant gas reserves allocated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company. The motion was unanimously passed, leading to the summoning of the managing director of the NDPHC to appear before the Committee on Power for further clarification.
