Greece has greenlit the acquisition of 35 UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters from U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp, as part of efforts to modernize its armed forces. The deal, totaling 1.15 billion euros ($1.24 billion), was approved by the parliament’s committee and finalized late on Tuesday, according to government sources.

This move comes as Greece aims to modernize its defense industry and strengthen its shipbuilding capabilities following a decade-long debt crisis. The government’s ambitious 10-year purchasing plan includes acquiring up to 40 new F-35 fighter jets from the U.S. and three frigates from France.

Additionally, Athens is engaged in discussions with the United States to collaborate on the co-design and construction of Constellation-class frigates for the Greek Navy. These initiatives reflect Greece’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and bolstering national security in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges.
