Nigeria has taken a significant step towards clean energy by signing a deal to construct a 20MW hybrid hydro-solar power plant, the first phase of a larger 300MW project.

Located in Shiroro, Niger state, the project is a collaboration between North South Power (NSP), a private company, and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), a state-run entity. Vice-President Kashim Shettima hailed the project as pioneering in hybridizing solar and hydro power, emphasizing its potential to bolster Nigeria’s energy resilience.

Nigeria has long grappled with power challenges despite its significant gas and oil reserves. Inadequate and inconsistent electricity supply often leads to widespread blackouts and necessitates reliance on alternative sources such as generators and inverters. The new hybrid power plant aims to address these issues and contribute to a more reliable and sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
