A Senegalese opposition coalition, supported by the influential figure Ousmane Sonko, launched its presidential campaign platform on Saturday, outlining ambitious proposals including the creation of a new national currency and the renegotiation of mining and energy contracts.
The coalition’s candidate, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, is among the 19 contenders competing for the presidency in the March 24 vote, despite the absence of public opinion polls in Senegal. The coalition’s agenda, if implemented, could have far-reaching implications for the West African Economic and Monetary Union and Senegal’s aspirations to become an oil producer later this year.
Faye emphasized the importance of economic sovereignty, stating that controlling sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and livestock management is crucial for achieving full independence. In the 84-page platform document, the coalition outlined its commitment to attaining food, digital, fiscal, energy, and scientific sovereignty.
