Here’s a breakdown of the top 5 imported goods from the United Kingdom to Nigeria in the last six months of 2023, as per the 2023 UK-Nigeria trade and investments fact sheets released by the Department for Business and Trade:

  1. Refined Oil: Refined oil was the most imported goods from the UK into Nigeria during this period. Nigeria spent over £669.4 million on refined oil imports, constituting 50.4 percent of all UK goods imported to Nigeria.
  2. Toilet & Cleansing Preparations: Toilet and cleansing products, including toilet paper, cleaning agents, disinfectants, hand soap, body wash, and facial cleansers, accounted for 3.8 percent of all import goods. Nigeria spent £50.0 million on importing these products between October 2022 and September 2023.
  3. Textile Fabrics: Nigeria imported textile fabrics from the UK, spending £49.7 million, representing 3.7 percent of import trade from Britain. Nigeria had previously banned imports of printed fabrics in 2002 to boost its textile industry but lifted the ban in 2015 with a 35 percent import duty implemented.
  4. General Industrial Machinery: General industrial machinery accounted for 2.5 percent of Nigeria’s total import goods. Nigeria spent £33.7 million on general industrial machinery as of Q3 2023.
  5. Miscellaneous Foods: The UK exported snacks, condiments, beverages, and other food products (excluding fruits and vegetables) worth £27.4 million to Nigeria. This category accounted for 2.1 percent of total trade during the four quarters.
