Meta to set up team to counter disinformation, AI abuse in EU elections
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced plans to establish a team dedicated to addressing disinformation and the misuse of generative artificial intelligence leading up to the European Parliament elections in June.
The initiative aims to counter concerns surrounding election interference and misleading AI-generated content.
Generative AI technology, capable of rapidly creating text, images, and video in response to prompts, has raised alarms about its potential to disrupt major elections worldwide, including the upcoming European Parliament elections scheduled for June 6-9.
With 720 lawmakers shaping EU policies and laws, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process is paramount. Marco Pancini, Meta’s head of EU affairs, revealed that an Elections Operations Center will be activated to identify potential threats and implement real-time mitigations as the election draws near.
Meta, alongside Microsoft, OpenAI, and 17 other tech companies, recently agreed to collaborate in preventing deceptive AI-generated content from interfering with global elections throughout the year.
