Self-employed Nigerians Increases to 88 percent- NBS

The National Beureu of Statiatics revealed in a document titled “Nigerian Lqbour Force Statistics Reports Q2 2023” that 88 percent of Nigerians are Self-employed and only 12 percent depends on wages.

It also revealed that the total unemployment rate stands at 4.2 percent as of Q2 2023- ” It said, “The unemployment rate for Q2 2023 was 4.2 per cent, this is a marginal increase from 4.1 per cent recorded in Q1 2023. Unemployment rate by sex among men was 3.5 per cent and among women was 5.9 per cent in Q2 2023. Disaggregation by location, the unemployment rate was 5.9 per cent in urban areas and 2.5 per cent in rural areas.”

However, the national secretary, Chris Onyeka upholds a contrary opinion on the data. He told The PUNCH, that “The statistic is not reliable. It is as simple as that. It is not in sync with what is on the ground. We all know that the rate of unemployment in Nigeria is increasing.”
