The All Farmers Association of Nigeria has revealed that farmers have not yet received the fertilizers promised by President Bola Tinubu. The fertilizers were intended to mitigate the impact of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and rising inflation.
In response to the PMS price hike and inflation concerns, President Tinubu directed the distribution of grains and fertilizers in July. The Central Bank of Nigeria confirmed that the distribution process for grains is ongoing.
However, officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which is supposed to be part of the distribution process, indicated that they are still awaiting directives from the Presidency.
The National Economic Council had previously urged NEMA to distribute grains to states within one or two weeks to reduce the price of food items and alleviate the impact of petrol subsidy removal on citizens.
The planned distribution of approximately 252,000 metric tonnes of grains and fertilizers, as instructed by President Tinubu, was expected to have commenced based on the President’s directive and the advice of the National Economic Council.
Kabir Ibrahim, the President of the All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, confirmed that farmers have not yet received the promised fertilizers. He also mentioned that most farmers are not in urgent need of grains.
