Nigerian National Petroleum Company Emphasizes Gas Development for Affordable and Clean Energy
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) plans to prioritize gas development and transportation projects to achieve affordable and clean energy, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 7.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, highlighted the need to strike a balance between energy accessibility, affordability, and sustainability in Africa to meet SDG targets.
Despite a transformation in Nigeria’s energy sector, the country is still increasing its focus on alternative cleaner energy sources alongside hydrocarbons.
NNPC Limited identifies gas as a transition fuel and aims to expand gas development and infrastructure to drive cleaner and more affordable energy solutions, given Nigeria’s vast reserves.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is also taking measures to address the energy trilemma by promoting the potential of natural gas as the cleanest fossil fuel and ensuring emission reduction and decarbonization strategies are integrated into energy projects.
