Petroleum engineers in Nigeria have voiced concerns over the decline in crude oil exports, attributing it to the ongoing security challenges surrounding oil pipelines. Despite ongoing oil exploration efforts, many oil companies are refraining from transporting their crude oil for exports due to the prevalent insecurity in the region, as noted by the Chairman of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Nigerian Council, Felix Obike.

Recent reports reveal that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) uncovered a significant number of illegal pipeline connections and illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region, particularly in Bayelsa. Such discoveries further exacerbate the security risks faced by the oil and gas sector, leading to more uncertainties in crude oil exports.

Against this backdrop, the forthcoming 2023 SPE Conference in Lagos aims to address the challenges posed by the insecurity of pipelines and discuss strategic options to achieve a balance between energy accessibility, affordability, and sustainability in Africa.

The SPE Nigeria Council, which is the Nigerian branch of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International, strives to promote the safe, secure, and sustainable development of the oil and gas industry to meet global energy demands.

Opinion: The security issues surrounding oil pipelines in Nigeria are a cause for concern as they significantly impact the country’s crude oil exports. It is crucial for the Nigerian government and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the security of pipelines to ensure the continuous flow of oil exports, which is essential for the nation’s economy. Furthermore, addressing these challenges will bolster investor confidence and attract much-needed investments in the oil and gas sector. By adopting strategic measures and fostering collaboration among key players, Nigeria can work towards a more secure and sustainable energy future.
