Notwithstanding its 2060 Carbon Emission Pledge, Nigeria Resumes Coal Exploration.

The federal government has indicated that coal mining would resume in the nation despite its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 by listing five coal blocks in Enugu for sale.

The Nigerian Coal Corporation (NCC) currently holds the coal fields on behalf of the federal government, according to the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), which issued an invitation for expressions of interest for the public auction of five coal blocks.

But, the most recent development appears to go against Nigeria’s commitment to using greener fuels.

At the COP26 Leaders’ Conference in November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland, President Muhammadu Buhari declared that Nigeria would reduce its emissions to zero by the year 2060. This, it claimed, allowed private enterprise participation in the field.
