The Coast Region’s Kwala Dry Port is finally scheduled to open this month, which is a significant development that will relieve pressure on the Dar es Salaam harbor. The only thing remaining to do before the business begins offering services formally is to obtain a bonded warehouse license from the taxman.

Initially, the port’s activities were slated to begin in January 2023, but a deferral was necessary due to difficulties getting a bonded storage license from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Because it will be able to hold transit cargo for the neighboring nations of Burundi, Rwanda, DR Congo, Uganda, Zambia, and Malawi, Kwala Dry Port activities will assist the Dar es Salaam seaport perform better.

“Kwala Dry Port is set to decongest the Dar es Salaam Port and improve its performance because offloaded cargo will be transported directly to the dry port,” recounted Mr. Migire. The dry port will also decongest the Dar es Salaam City because Cargo offloaded from ships will be transported by rail directly to the dry port Kwala.
