According to U.N. Spokesman Stephane Dujarric, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Nigerian authorities to look into claims of widespread and forced abortions allegedly carried out by the Nigerian army.

According to Reuters, the Nigerian Army has been operating an illegal, routine, and abortion program in the nation’s northeast at least since 2013.

According to dozens of witness accounts and documents examined by Reuters, the program involved ending at least 10,000 pregnancies among women and girls, many of whom had been abducted and raped by Islamist militants. If further action was required, he urged a thorough investigation as well as “immediate remedial actions and accountability measures.” Nigeria’s defence minister declared that the military would not look into the claim.
