The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has alerted authorities to a drug cartel’s intention to enter the Nigerian market with the deadly synthetic opioid Fentanyl.

The NDLEA stated in a statement released that the drug is 100 times more potent than tramadol. The statement was signed by Femi Babafemi, the agency’s director of media and advocacy.

THE NDLEA asserts that the new illegal substance has the potential to kill large numbers of Nigerians.

The substance already accounts for more than 70% of overdose deaths; and is a major cause of both fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the US. The liquid version of the illicitly produced fentanyl may be found as nasal sprays, ocular drops, and tiny candies.
