A supertanker detained by Equatorial Guinean authorities for allegedly transporting crude into Nigeria, is the subject of an inquiry, according to the Nigerian Navy.
The vessel and its crew were over to the Central African nation after they fled the AKPO oilfield in Nigeria; after their actions were discover by Nigerian Navy agents.
A spokesperson for the Nigerian Navy, confirmed that the ship is returning to Nigeria for more investigations. He claimed that following the conclusion of the investigation, the federal government’s attorney general (AGF) office will decide whether or not to bring charges against the ship and its crew.
“The ship is returning to Nigeria for an inquiry; the HAGF office will handle any potential legal action. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited announced it in September due to oil theft and terminal destruction.
