The local fire service has confirmed that a stampede on Saturday night during Halloween celebrations in Seoul, South Korea, resulted in at least 146 fatalities and 150 injuries.
In the Itaewon District, the most international part of the city, next to the Yongsan Garrison U.S. Military post, the event took place in a little alleyway next to the Hamilton Hotel. The precise reason of the stampede remains unknown.
Many of them, according to the news agency Yonhap, are women in their 20s, and one of them is a ten-year-old child. The victims were sent to several hospitals in the capital.
Soon after the incident, President Yoon Suk-yeol presided over a meeting to discuss the emergency response. “the first priority is transferring and rescuing the victims and giving immediate medical treatment to the injured people.”
