India, the world’s largest exporter of the grain, put a 20% levy on exports of different grades of rice in an effort to stabilize local prices.

Concerns have been about the production of rice in a nation that already banned wheat exports; and curtailed sugar shipments this year due to below-average rainfall in important rice-producing areas. Including West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
