Following a regular inspection on June 25, the completion deadline for Uganda’s showpiece $1.7 billion hydroelectric project, the Karuma Dam, has been moved back to June 22, 2022.

Work on the 600MW dam on the Nile at Kiryandongo is 98.8% complete. According to Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL). Although commissioning has been pushed back several months due to minor but major outstanding works.

UEGCL board chairperson Proscovia Njuki told The EastAfrican that “The remaining works may appear minor. But they are massive in terms of the issues that need to be addressed,”
Njuki was referring to the remedial work that needs to be done after UEGCL. The government agency in charge of the project, entrusted the contractor with fixing the dam’s faults. If they are not fixed, they will jeopardize the plant’s safety, dependability, and operation.

They include electro-mechanical works with quality difficulties such as electric and cabling flaws. They did not match the Engineer’s Statement of Requirements’ standards (ESR).

UEGCL CEO Harrison Mutikanga said, “We are impressed that the contractor has made overall progress and has begun work on the remedial repairs.”
