President Muhammadu Buhari has called for a review of trade relations with the United Kingdom (UK) following the country’s exit from the European Union.

According to a State House statement released by Buhari’s media aide, Garba Shehu, the United Kingdom and its old partners in the Commonwealth of Nations now has the opportunity to renew trade ties with old partners and make new deals with them.

The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is reportedly on the same page with President Buhari on how to make a future Commonwealth prosperous and beneficial to members like Nigeria.

While speaking in Greenwich, Johnson was said to have shown interest in partnering with Nigeria and other nations of the Commonwealth in the emerging trade scenario occasioned by Brexit.

“With the expected exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union having taken place, the stage is set for a new trade regime between the UK and its old partners as well as an alignment with new trading partners.

“President Muhammadu Buhari, understanding the inevitability of the situation, had stated earlier of the opportunities presented by Nigeria and indeed other nations of the Commonwealth in the emerging trade scenario occasioned by Brexit.

“It is, therefore, heart-warming that Prime Minister Boris Johnson also believes that indeed, a new dawn awaits the United Kingdom in its trade relationship with countries within the Commonwealth, Nigeria inclusive as reflected in his speech earlier on Monday in Greenwich,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Nairametrics had reported recently that the Federal Government had made efforts in attracting the United Kingdom to Nigeria’s mineral sector. The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Olamilekan Adegbite had tasked investors in the United Kingdom (UK) to consider investing in Nigeria’s mineral and mining sector, as it features attractive incentives and potentials.
