Nigeria’s foreign exchange supply rose significantly in 2025, reaching $8.94bn, up 20.5 per cent from the $7.43bn recorded in 2024, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s 2025 Statistical Bulletin. The increase means the country supplied about $1.51bn more in foreign exchange during the year, highlighting an improvement in FX availability despite continued volatility in the market.

The CBN data showed that foreign exchange supply started the year at relatively low levels before gaining momentum in the second quarter. Supply stood at $590.64m in January and $607.63m in February, before climbing to $1.04bn in March. It peaked at $1.65bn in April, marking the strongest monthly supply level recorded during the year.

However, the improvement was not sustained throughout the year. FX supply dropped to $838.93m in May and $676.31m in June before recovering slightly to $759.02m in July. It stood at $677.84m in August and fell further to $399.80m in September. October recorded the year’s lowest supply at just $150.10m, before the market saw a rebound to $638.38m in November and $910.73m in December.

Beyond the $8.94bn FX supply figure, the CBN reported that total foreign exchange inflows into Nigeria increased by 13.81 per cent to $109.86bn in 2025, compared with $96.53bn in 2024. At the same time, FX outflows rose by 27.83 per cent to $49.05bn from $38.37bn. As a result, Nigeria recorded a net foreign exchange inflow of $60.81bn in 2025, slightly higher than the $58.16bn recorded a year earlier.

The CBN noted that the $8.94bn FX supply figure should not be confused with the broader $109.86bn inflow figure, as the two datasets capture different aspects of foreign exchange activity. The latest figures nevertheless point to increased movement of foreign currency through Nigeria’s financial system, even as the FX market remained volatile in 2026. The CBN data did not provide a detailed breakdown of the sources of the $8.94bn supplied during 2025.
